There is no doubt that US elections 2008 will be one of the most memorable... once comedians and cartoons start to give their opinions... it is a good sign that it is going to be an interesting race.
Recently I have noticed the amount of information regarding peacebuilding and the media. "Transcend", the international network for peace and development, supported by Johan Galtung has a very interesting area of work called "media services" that focuses especially in Peace Journalism.
In on of their videos, Galtung highlights the importance of the media in fostering a culture of peace. He calls for a different type of journalism. A journalism that goes beyond the record of number of victims in a conflict, but a journalism that explores the causes of the conflict, its dynamics and the analysis for its transformation.
There are some interesting examples of Colombia in peace journalism. "Medios para la paz" is an NGO devoted to provide tools and training to journalist intrested in a more responsible vision of the conflict and the various peace initiatives.
However, I don't think journalists in Colombia are well trained in the basics of peace studies. Moreover, I don't think mass media in Colombia is interested in learning. We are so used to violence that it is difficult to get out of the cycle. Any peace activity can be seen suspicious because we don't have the lens to understand it.
Unfortunately, Colombia is one of the most dangerous countries for journalists in the world. Several Colombian journalists had to leave the contry and requeste refugee in Europe and North America, just for doing their job. This exodus is now normal.
Peace education and peace journalism is not only for the journalists, but for also for the public...
